Stories have been with us for thousands of years. At some point in the beginning, it was drawings which told the tales of epic adventure, how to get to the next watering hole, or the location of an exotic island. As we evolved, the written word became the choice of storytellers. The written word gave the story new dimension and depth that could not be properly expressed in a drawing. These words also allowed Kings and peasants to be on common ground. However, throughout all our evolution the spoken word has captured our hearts and imagination.
In my childhood home, “Story Time” was Sunday evening before the Wonderful World of Disney took to the airwaves. My brother and I would sit on the floor in front of the fireplace while Dad would read a few pages from “My friend Flicka”, as Mom listened from the sofa. Needless to say, I don’t remember the story but I do remember the love that filled our living room on those winter evenings.
“Story Time” comes from our need to share with others our adventures. There is nothing better at the end of a long fishing day than to sit with your friends and talk about the ones that got away. Fishing stories, no matter how outrageous, seem to be more the adventure than the fish caught. It’s the story that binds us together, and keeps us going back for one more adventure.
I created “Story Time” as a reminder of the stories we’ve heard, starred in, and told. It also serves as a beacon of the stories waiting to be found and shared. A story not shared is like a love not ever found or an adventure never taken. It’s not about the untold story as much as it is about an unshared joy. Don’t be afraid to share your story. Everyone’s adventure is a novel. So take “Story Time” with you and remember the next great story is just an adventure away.
