What do we do with the leftovers, cutouts, and misfits? It is a question that everyone asks from time to time. Some people just throw away what they can’t use or don’t understand. Others continue to find treasures amongst the junk. I’ve always heard that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and everything has a value. It has, for me, never been more evident than with the creation of “Odds and Ends”.
Before the end of 2010, I was rummaging through my junk pile and found “treasures” amongst the gems. I knew then I would have to create a work of art from the “leftovers”. “Odds and Ends” is the reality of that thought process. What you see from the “discards” is life continuing on the journey.
Okay, here it comes…the deep stuff. Each life is filled with “Odds and Ends”, stuff discarded from others. When we were young it might have been hand-me-down clothes or, from a little farther back, a dress from the flour sacks. Maybe comic books from your friends, or that Playboy magazine from under your Dad’s sink fits the bill as a leftover. As we grew into the teenage years, “Odds and Ends” became friends who didn’t fit into the usual “clicks” or teachers who taught outside the “box” just so you would learn something about the grand concept called life. (Much to the chagrin of the school administration.)
Now, as I see 50 on the horizon and more of my life behind me than in front of me, I realize that the “Odds and Ends” are the things which have not only given me the most pleasure but have also given me the greatest treasures in this adventure I call my life. So, as you travel on your journey, don’t hesitate to look for the things that don’t quite fit or are just a little different than normal. The “Odds and Ends” are what your friends will remember long after your dust has settled.
