I never make a piece of art about the beach or ocean that one or more of Jimmy’s CD’s aren’t in the CD player. When I am not listening, I am singing along as I go through the art process.
This picture has been tumbling around in the recesses of my mind since I started making art. The frame is the very 1st one I ever built. I knew when I began, if I was going to make art which was based on beaches, oceans, and other miscellaneous beach items that someday I would have to make a piece for the guy whom the beach life is synonymous with his name, Jimmy Buffett. Well, this is someday!
I have listened to Jimmy’s music since I was a freshman @ Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, OK. A wrestler, Big Dave, was a super fan and as we became friends he introduced me to the beach life as described through the lyrics of Jimmy’s songs. I’ve lost track of Big Dave but I always think about him whenever Cowboy in the Jungle comes on.
As I said earlier, this picture is for Mr. Buffett. No…I don’t know him nor have I found a good way to contact him. However, I’ve got friends who might help and I always tell everyone about the picture in hopes someone will “pay it forward” and Jimmy and I will eventually meet. Until we meet, I will take it with me on the road, displaying it with my other works of art.
The picture, “Jimmy’s Pair-o-Dice”, is a reflection of things that, I think, mean something to Mr. Buffett and songs, which have followed me for years. You have to respect anybody who rolls their dice and continues to play the game knowing that if they make enough throws 7’s will eventually show and they get to be the winner.
Mr. Buffett always thanks everyone at his concerts for allowing him to have his “summer job”. However, I want to thank Jimmy for doing his “summer job”. Sometimes, in the work-a-day world it is easy to forget about the important things in life. Jimmy’s music has always reminded me that Paradise is never far away.
Thanks for sharing with the world, Jimmy (and the Coral Reefer Band).
